Spec-Thermal Pre-Insulated Masonry Walls provide Energy Code compliance with double exposed masonry surfaces. The load bearing structural elements of the wall and the insulation are built into the masonry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Spec-Thermal™ is a pre-insulated concrete masonry unit system that integrates advanced thermal insulation into the core of the CMU. It provides superior thermal performance while maintaining the structural benefits of traditional concrete masonry construction. It is ideal for energy-efficient buildings, especially where masonry finishes are needed on both sides of the wall.
Spec-Thermal™ incorporates insulation within the masonry unit, reducing heat transfer through the wall system. This insulation reduces thermal bridging, significantly improving the overall energy performance of the building. By increasing R-values and minimizing heat loss, Spec-Thermal™ helps buildings meet or exceed energy efficiency standards like ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) guidelines.
Spec-Thermal™ CMUs provide R-values up to R-16, depending on the specific unit and wall configuration. This high thermal resistance allows buildings to stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing HVAC energy consumption.
- Smooth face (4” and 8” heights)
- Split face (8” height)
- Ground face (8” height
Spec-Thermal™ units are available with the Spec-Brik blended colors, among other choices. This flexibility allows architects to customize the exterior appearance while still benefiting from the thermal performance and durability of the system.
HI-R: CMU with two cross webs and uses integral insulation that is 2.5” thick.
HI-R-H: CMU with one cross web and is available with insulation of 3”, 3.5”, or 4” thick. HI-R is suitable for either partially or fully grouted wall construction. HI-R-H is optimized for full grout construction. The thermal performance of the HI-R-H units is greater than that of HI-R. Both HI-R and HI-R-H are available in half-high versions.
Spec-Thermal™ units are non-combustible and provide excellent fire resistance, with ratings of up to 4 hours for fully grouted walls, depending on the specific wall design. This makes the system an ideal choice for buildings that require enhanced fire safety, such as schools, hospitals, and commercial facilities.
- Commercial Buildings (offices, retail centers)
- Educational Facilities (schools, universities, athletic facilities)
- Healthcare Buildings (hospitals, clinics)
- Multi-family Residential (apartments, condos)
- Wastewater treatment plants
- Government and Institutional Buildings (police stations, fire stations, detention facilities, offices)
Its thermal efficiency and durability make it suitable for new construction and retrofits in various climates.
- Simplicity of construction: Spec-Thermal walls provide structure, aesthetics, insulation, weather, and fire protection in one step. ICF walls require additional exterior cladding and interior fire protection.
- Cost: Spec-Thermal walls are significantly less costly (up to 40% less) than ICF walls.
- Thermal Performance: Both can be designed to meet Energy Code requirements in stringent climate zones.
- Wall Thickness: ICF walls are typically thicker than Spec-Thermal walls, requiring a larger footprint.
- Non-combustible: ICF systems must be fire-protected with finishes, while fully grouted Spec-Thermal walls exceed a four-hour fire rating without additional protection.
